"The Ships"

"Lillebælt-Værftet"
of
Middelfart
Denmark
- a traditional shipyard founded in 1855 -
The yard was founded in 1855
by boat builder Ads Ileum Peterson, - brother of Has Ileum Peterson, who
built the still preserved cutter "Nordstjernen" at his shipyard at "Sølyst"
back in 1872.
Click on this link to
"Nordstjernen" and
see how beautiful she turned out after extensive repairs on "Lillebælt-Værftet"
Ads Ileum Peterson started
by building mainly smaller boat types like dinghies and fishing smacks,
but later the yard also built many fishing boats for the North Sea as well
as pleasure boats.
The yard can still turn out
traditional wooden boats, but nowadays it is mostly involved in repair
and maintenance of Denmark's large fleet of traditional wooden ships.
The yard and its activities
is a major attraction to the city of Middelfart, and is now center in one
of the best historical waterfronts in Denmark.
For and old sailor, - like
me -, and to "landlubbers" as well -, this is great, because you get extremely
good opportunities to see a lot of the old ships from Denmark's maritime
heritage - - -
Also the shipyard is the center
of a guilt, that maintains old boat types, - both originals as well as
new built copies of old boats.
Please enjoy my impressions
from a historical shipyard, - "Lillebælt-Værftet".
